Greece’s February 28 train crisis essentially kicked off campaigning for an election that would have had to take place by July. New Democracy set the election for May 21, but it is likely that there will be a runoff election in early July. That is because the May 21 election will allocate parliament seats in proportion to parties’ share of the popular vote. It is highly likely that this will result in a hung parliament, as no party appears to have the votes to claim 151 seats in the 300-seat chamber, and the three top parties have said they don’t want to work with each other – though that is standard polarising behaviour before an election.
